Preparing for Spiritual Guidance
Spiritual guidance, also known as spiritual direction, is a sacred and personal journey of drawing closer to God with the help of a spiritual guide. It is not counseling or therapy, but a conversation centered on your relationship with the Lord, your prayer life, and your spiritual growth.
What Is Spiritual Guidance?
Spiritual guidance is a regular, confidential meeting—usually with a priest, religious, or trained lay person—where you speak about your interior life, prayer, struggles, and God’s movement in your soul. The goal is to discern God’s will and grow in holiness.
Key aspects:
- Deepening your relationship with God
- Understanding His will for your life
- Receiving insight on how to grow in prayer and virtue
- Finding peace and clarity in spiritual struggles
How to Prepare for Your Session
1. Pray Beforehand
Spend some quiet time with the Lord before your session. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide the conversation. A simple prayer could be:
“Come, Holy Spirit, open my heart to Your wisdom and help me to know Your will for my life. Amen.”
2. Reflect on Your Spiritual Life
Before the meeting, ask yourself questions such as:
- How is my prayer life? Do I feel close to God?
- What have I been struggling with spiritually?
- Where have I felt God’s presence—or absence—recently?
- Are there decisions I need to discern?
- Am I growing in virtue, or falling into patterns of sin or distraction?
3. Be Honest and Open
Spiritual guidance is a place of trust. You don’t need to impress your director. Be sincere about your joys, doubts, confusions, and questions. Your honesty will help the Holy Spirit work more clearly through the session.
4. Bring a Journal or Notes
It can be helpful to write down key points before and after your meeting—such as graces received in prayer, questions you have, or moments when you felt spiritually dry. A notebook will also help you track your growth over time.
5. Don’t Expect Quick Fixes
Spiritual growth is a lifelong journey. Sometimes you’ll leave a session with clear answers; other times with more questions. Trust the process. The goal is not perfection, but faithfulness and a deeper love for God.
6. Schedule Regularly
Spiritual guidance works best when it’s consistent—whether once a month or every few weeks. Regular sessions build trust and allow for a deeper, ongoing journey.
What Spiritual Guidance Is Not
- It is not Confession—though you may be advised to go to Confession as part of your growth.
- It is not therapy or counseling—though it may touch on personal struggles in a spiritual context.
- It is not a place of judgment—but a space for encouragement and gentle correction.
Final Thoughts
Approach spiritual guidance as a grace—a gift from God. It is a way to journey with Christ more intentionally, with the support of someone who listens with the heart of the Church.
“In your light, we see light.” — Psalm 36:9
