About the Litany of Our Lady
The Litany of Our Lady—also called the Litany of Loreto—originated in the medieval shrine at Loreto, Italy, where local traditions of Marian prayer crystallized into this series of invocations. It was first approved for public use by Pope Sixtus V in 1587. Each title of Mary, drawn from Scripture and early Christian reflection, highlights a role by which she cares for the Church and its faithful.
Over the centuries, popes and saints have recommended praying this litany in times of need—on Marian feast days, at processions, and as part of personal devotion. Those who recite it with faith implore Mary’s powerful intercession, receive her maternal protection, and grow in charity, hope, and trust in Christ her Son.
